Artist Bio

I am Christina Capilano, from the Mathias family of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh nation. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. In 2023 I lost my mother to cancer. She would say that she was learning our traditions so that she may be a worthy ancestor to remember one day, and "just trying to be better than I was yesterday”. Art is medicine; beading, weaving, carving, regalia making and design work allow me to feel connected to my heritage and closer to my ancestors. In my mother's memory, I strive to continue learning and creating. With this residency, I want to create designs that will be turned into an area rug and displayed in the common space of one of the Sen̓áḵw towers, as well as designs for a metal inlay feature outside of the wellness pavillion at Sen̓áḵw.
